Lake Taupo’s water quality

Key Points | Report Card | Technical Information | Data

This indicator measures the physical and chemical characteristics (such as clarity and nutrients) at a single deep-water sampling site in Lake Taupo. This tells us how suitable the lake’s water is for freshwater plants and animals. It also measures the levels of faecal bacteria at 18 bathing beaches around the lake edge, which shows us whether the water quality is suitable for contact recreation.

This indicator shows that:

  • Water quality for ecology in Lake Taupo is largely satisfactory to excellent.
  • Water quality for contact recreation (such as swimming) is mostly excellent. But at beaches near urban areas bacterial levels are sometimes high.

  • Ecological health data were collected between 2004-2008. Contact recreation data used here were collected in the summer of 2007-2008.
