River water quality for contact recreation

Key Points | Report Card | Technical Information | Data

Environment Waikato routinely monitors water clarity and E. coli (bacteria) levels in rivers and streams around the region. Water clarity and E. coli levels show us whether the water quality is suitable for contact recreation (for example, swimming).

This indicator shows that:

  • Water quality for contact recreation such as swimming in rivers is generally good in the upper Waikato River, and in rivers and streams in the Taupo and Coromandel areas.
  • In other parts of the region land use is more intensive, and river water quality for contact recreation is poorer.
  • Find out more in the Report Card.
Percentage of samples meeting our guidelines for excellent, satisfactory or unsatisfactory river water quality for contact recreation.

  • Use our maps to check out your local water quality in the Waikato River and in other rivers and streams in the Waikato region.
  • Use our glossary to find out more about why we measure E. coli and how we measure river water clarity.
