River water quality for contact recreation
Key Points | Report Card | Technical Information | Data
Environment Waikato routinely monitors water clarity and E. coli (bacteria) levels in rivers and streams around the region. Water clarity and E. coli levels show us whether the water quality is suitable for contact recreation (for example, swimming).
This indicator shows that:
- Water quality for contact recreation such as swimming in rivers is generally good in the upper Waikato River, and in rivers and streams in the Taupo and Coromandel areas.
- In other parts of the region land use is more intensive, and river water quality for contact recreation is poorer.
