Environment Waikato’s Regional Pest Management Strategy (RPMS) is a five-year plan describing why and how various plant and animal pests will be controlled in the Waikato region.
The Waikato Regional Council (Environment Waikato) has reviewed the Operative 2002-2007 Regional Pest Management Strategy under section 88 of the Biosecurity Act 1993. The operative strategy (2002-2007) will remain in force until the proposed strategy has been through the consultation and appeals period and has been adopted by council.
Council received 356 submissions on the review proposal. The submissions covered many points. However, the majority addressed the pest status of animal pests, predominantly feral pigs and wild deer. Council also received submissions on definitions in the strategy, pest plants, funding mechanisms and the general approach of the strategy. The summary of submissions can be downloaded in PDF format below.
Council approved the strategy in June; however the Tokoroa Pig Hunting Club has appealed the council's decision to include wild pigs and deer as pests in the strategy. The revised RPMS cannot become effective until this appeal has been resolved. The operative strategy (2002-2007) will remain in force until that time.

During the review of the RPMS, a Hearings Committee heard submissions to the strategy over five days in the week of 21 May 2007. The Hearings Committee met again on 5, 6, and 12 June 2007 to deliberate on submissions and make recommendations on those submissions. As a result of the hearings and deliberations the committee considered some changes were appropriate.
The committee decisions, an officer's report and a strikethrough document incorporating the changes proposed was presented to council. At its meeting of 28 June 2007, council adopted the recommendations of the committee as its decisions and resolved to notify these decisions to all submitters and the public.
You can download a copy of the committee decisions and the complete strikethrough of the proposal reflecting the changes made by the committee below.
