Risk mitigation plans aim to minimise the effect of natural hazards on the Waikato economy and community. The Waikato Region can be affected by a number of natural hazards - floods, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, cyclones, coastal flooding, erosion, water shortage, rural fires and land instability. Plan contents

Each plan defines the role of Environment Waikato, district councils, and the community in managing the effects of natural hazards. The plans outline the ways of reducing the effects of natural hazards as well as what Environment Waikato and district councils do after a major natural hazard event.

There is also an emphasis on working in partnership with district councils and communities to find acceptable solutions to natural hazard issues.The Resource Management Act 1991 and the Civil Defence Emergency Management Act 2002 give regional councils responsibilities in:

• hazard identification and risk assessment
  
• preparing and implementing risk mitigation plans
  
• providing early warnings of natural hazard events
  
• planning for emergency response.
