Sustainable subdivision development

In many parts of the Waikato region, the landscape is rapidly changing as a result of subdivisions for urban development, coastal development or rural residential blocks. This is particularly obvious in coastal areas, around Hamilton City, around Lake Taupo, along the Waikato River and in other particularly attractive and accessible parts of the region. Subdivision development can affect many of the things Environment Waikato seeks to manage such as water bodies, biodiversity, regional amenity values, air quality, soil and mineral resources, regional infrastructure and natural hazard risk. The report “Sustainable Subdivision Development – An Environment Waikato Perspective” has been developed to encourage sustainable subdivision practices in the region. The report provides helpful ideas and advice to district council planners, developers and earthwork contractors about how they can create more environmentally sustainable subdivisions. Passenger transport

Environment Waikato is responsible for providing passenger transport services in the Waikato region. We contract external providers to operate bus services in Hamilton city, and for services between Hamilton and Huntly, Te Awamutu (including Kihikihi), Paeroa, Te Aroha, Morrinsville, Thames and Coromandel. Civil defence and emergency management

New Zealand’s civil defence and emergency management system sets out how to prepare for and deal with events which threaten people’s lives and property. Environment Waikato is one of many local government organisations involved in Civil Defence and Emergency Management in the Waikato region. Navigation safety

Environment Waikato is responsible for navigation and safety issues in the Waikato region. Our Navigation Safety Bylaw 2002 aims to ensure the safe and fair use of our lakes, rivers and harbours for water skiing, swimming, boating, kayaking and other water activities. River and catchment management

Environment Waikato is responsible for the overall management of rivers and catchments in the Waikato region. River and catchment management involves controlling the effects of flooding and erosion.
